La Befana – An Italian Folktale for a new feature – Saturday Stories

Who doesn’t love a good story? You never outgrow them and the best part about hearing stories as you get older is that you may have forgotten them. Hearing them again brings that warm, happy feeling like discovering a long lost childhood treasure. There’s nothing I love more than a good story.

Thanks to Terry who shared a blog devoted to Abruzzo bloggers – I can now share even more Abruzzo stories, recipes, travel and photos.

I realize we are months away from Epiphany – but I love this folktale of La Befana. How appropriate to give gifts at the time the Magi were presenting their gifts to the Christ child.

No more Twelfth Night parties for me – I’m celebrating La Befana next year!

La Befana vien di notte,

con le scarpe tutte rotte,

col cappello alla romana …

viva, viva, la Befana!

La Befana

Does anyone remember celebrating this Italian tradition while growing up? Maybe with your own children or grandchildren? We’d love to hear about it in the comments space below or as a post on Trovando’s Facebook page.
